Well FreakFest is over for another year and what an awesome, fun, exhausting and exciting day it was!

Naomi Hart performing at FreakFest 2014

The event kicked off at 10am with a performance from local school band ‘Rock Shock’ getting proceedings underway with a couple of original songs. The scooter comp was up first on the skate park and was hotly competed – it was great to see the number of young people willing to show off their skills during all the competitions! For those not watching the scooter action, Rhee Tae Kwon Do treated us to an action packed demo – there were boards and tiles getting smashed everywhere you looked. Next up on the stage was Naomi Hart (a recent winner of the Encouragement Award at this year’s Gozzy Rock who also performed at the last LyriK Awards Ceremony) whose original material was well received by those in attendance.

Following Naomi was the #BeStrongSpeakUp mental health panel who took some time to answer questions about mental health that young people had submitted (through the hashtag #BeStrongSpeakUp on social media) in the weeks

leading up to Freakfest. The #BeStrongSpeakUp campaign was a concept thought up by the Kwinana Youth Advisory Council and the panel acted as the culmination to the campaign. The panel consisted of both young people who have personally experienced mental illness as well as people who are professionals in the field. There were some great questions submitted and the panel engaged in an informative and relevant discussion around these questions with the hope being that more young people will be encouraged to ‘Be Strong and Speak Up’  about mental health after hearing what some of their friends had asked.

The BMX comp followed the panel discussion and if you weren’t hanging out at the skatepark checking out the huge tricks then the Fun Tent was the place to be! Throughout the day, young people could take part in a range of activities that included cap art, badge making, girls nail art and hair braiding or donning one of the many super hero ‘box heads’ and taking a selfie at our Freakfest photo booth. As if that wasn’t enough, there was also FREE slushies and fairy floss…FREE!!!!

Back on stage, Mia & Ida performed an array of solo and duo material that continued to entertain the crowd. The skate competition closed out things up at the skate park before some more amazing performances from India Bradshaw and Tanesha Bennell finalised the activities on the stage.  With a little time left in the day there was some last minute slushie runs and Super Hero Selfies at the photo booth before time was called on another successful FreakFest.

We would like to acknowledge the young people involved with the Urban GATE program who did an outstanding job on creating the FreakFest ‘Hollywood style’ sign that was installed on the hill for the day – it looked AMAZING!! Make sure you head over to our photo gallery to see the sign and all the pictures from the day.

A massive thankyou goes out to the workers who spent many months preparing for the event and to the volunteers who joined them to deliver all activities for the day. Lastly, we must also mention the event sponsors – GDF Suez Mitsui (naming sponsor), LDAG and the Smith Family, without their support we would not be able to celebrate the youth of Kwinana through this event each year. THANKS!

Now to start planning for FreakFest 2015…
